Life Sketch
John Benjamin "Ben" Littlefair was the grandfather
of Thomas Joseph Elias, my sisters and I called him Pampaw. He was known as Ben
or John, and in some cases Little John (perhaps a spin on his last name or a
reference to his stature, he was about 5' 5" tall).
Ben had only a
grammar school education, but he had a lot of street smarts and could diagnose
and fix any problem with an automobile.
Ben was a WWII veteran. He joined
the US Army on 11 Sep 1940 in Peoria, IL. During WWII and served as a Private in
the U.S. Army in Lithuania. At some point he was run over by a jeep and his legs
were broken. This event resulted in him being medically discharged from the
Army.
He was loved by everyone and always had a positive attitude about
things and could summon laughter from others at ease.
He was a taxicab
driver as well as a stock car race driver about 1950 in Chicago, Illinois. His
race car was called Zebra, painted as black and white stripes with a large 3"
gas cap painted fire engine red. The body was mounted on the frame backwards, so
it looked like he was backing up around the track, which confused the other
racers. His daughter (Sandy) would sit in the stands and cry every time he
crashed.
Other than his time in the Army, Ben lived in the Illinois area
until 1953 when he moved to Houston, Texas. In 1930 he was 7 years old living
with his parents in Marseilles, Illinois, 1940 he was still living with his
parents in Marseilles, Illinois, 1950 he lived in Valparaiso, Indiana., with
Fannie Williams (Nola's adopted mother) and his daughter Sandy.
He was
married several times and was quite a womanizer. Documents for many of his
marriages have not been found and it is suspected that some of the marriages may
not have been official. He fathered 5 known children, each to a different
relationship.
He moved to Houston from Illinois in 1953, to join his
daughter Sandy, 1960 he lived in Houston, Texas., with Ned and his daughter
Sandy, it is unknow if others were living with them.
After he moved to
Texas, he worked as an automotive mechanic and eventually became a Certified
Ford Master Mechanic and worked at several Ford dealerships until his death,
including Bob Curry Ford, Jim Sanders Ford, and Tommy Vaughan Ford.
In
1970 it is likely that Ben was living alone, in 1980 he was living in Houston
with Frankie.
In 1953, Ben was turned on to saltwater fishing in
Galveston, Texas, he loved it. About 1961, he had a 14' Chris Craft boat and was
ready to camp and fish anytime.
He had full dentures and claimed that he
had had his teeth knocked out with a pistol while he was being robbed when he
was a taxicab driver in Chicago, that's likely not the case.
When his
daughter Sandy was young, he would often take her to the icehouses with him and
if he had too much to drink, he would let her sit on his lap as they drove home,
and he would work the clutch, gas and break and she would steer and tell him
when to stop and go and when they got home, she would park along the street. In
the morning he would get up and he could tell by how far away from the curb the
truck was if she drove home.
On one occasion Ben, Sandy and Gene went to
West Bay, Galveston and Ben caught a Redfish and had it in the live well. Gene
was new to fishing and had not seen a big fish up close before, so it took it
out of the well to examine it and the fish flopped back into the bay.
He
said that he knew Hank Williams, Sr. personally and drank with him many times at
local icehouses.
I remember as a young child, while eating watermelon, I
swallowed a seed. I told Pampaw and he asked if it was horizontal or vertical
when I swallowed it. He explained that a new watermelon would grow the same
orientation, making me either taller or wider. I knew then that it was not going
to be a problem.
I can remember a banter that Pampaw and my dad (Gene)
would have on many occasions when leaving a restaurant.
Pampaw "I've had
sufficient". Gene "You went fishing?". "No, I've had plenty". "You caught 20?".
"No, I'm stuffed". "They were stuffed?".
We were at a seafood
restaurant and Pampaw was chewing on a lemon. I said, "doesn't that lemon hurt
your teeth" and he said "No", then he pulled his dentures out.
When I was
14, I spent the summer with Pampaw and Frankie, working with Pampaw at Tommie
Vaughn Ford as a Porter (Running for parts, steam-cleaning engines, moving cars)
I can remember Frankie's spaghetti and homemade pear cake.
Ben died 6 Feb
1983, in Houston, Texas at the age of 61 from Cardiopulmonary disease and
Emphysema, he had suffered several heart attacks over the past decades. He was
buried in 1983 in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas, where his
last wife Frankie joined him. He smoked unfiltered cigarettes, started with
Camel then Pall Mall for the last several years of his life. He was a heavy
drinker and drank straight whiskey and beer almost daily.
